The Denver-Boulder metro region in Colorado is among the winners in the migration shuffle. Led by Denver and Boulder, Colorado has built a thriving tech industry ecosystem attracting both startups and tech giants — Google, Amazon and Salesforce all now have a major presence in the area. CNBCOver the last five years, about $17 billion in VC funding has poured into the area, according to research firm CB Insights. While the Denver startup community has seen dramatic expansion, it hasn't made as much progress on diversifying its business community. However, even the top 10 cities for Black-owned business growth in the study fall far short of corresponding metro population metrics.

The decision by Mr. Buck, a Republican, to resign next week rather than at the end of the year complicated what was already a rocky path for Ms. Boebert to secure his seat. The state’s Democratic governor, Jared Polis, quickly announced a special election would be held on June 25 to fill Mr. Buck’s seat. That left Ms. Boebert with a conundrum: If she resigned from her current seat in order to run in the special election, she would risk reducing the Republicans’ already razor-thin House majority by teeing up a special election in her current district, where a Democrat has a chance of winning. In 2022, Ms. Boebert nearly lost her district, which is on the Rockies’ western slopes, to Adam Frisch, a Democrat. If she had resigned by May 14, it would have given Mr. Frisch a shot at winning her seat in a special election.

The snowstorm has passed, but the fire — one among several major blazes active in Texas — keeps burning. As of Friday, the Smokehouse Creek Fire had affected more than a million acres, making it the largest wildfire in Texas history, and one of the biggest in the history of the country. Texans know that fires aren’t uncommon in the Panhandle this time of year, and neither is snow. But huge, lethal fires like Smokehouse Creek represent something different. Two weeks before the Smokehouse Fire broke out, I flew to Seattle from Cincinnati over a landscape I know well.

For generations, America waged a war against the wolf; now with the animals repopulating the Mountain West, the wolf war has taken on a new shape: pitting neighbors against neighbors as they fight over how to manage wolves. It’s a lesson in how even in extremely polarized times, it’s possible to make heated issues less divisive. The predominant narrative of the Big Bad Wolf, which has its roots in biblical stories and Northern European fairy tales, arrived with colonization of America. Government-funded extermination programs incentivized the killing of wolves, largely as a project of “civilizing” the wilderness, an offshoot of Manifest Destiny. By the mid-20th century, wolves in the contiguous United States had been shot, poisoned and trapped almost to extinction, with just a few stragglers in the Upper Midwest.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Jim Leyland left his living room in Thornburg, Pennsylvania, and had gone upstairs to lie down, convinced the call to Cooperstown wasn't coming. Hall chairman Jane Forbes Clark was on the line and Leyland had been voted in, two weeks shy of his 79th birthday. Leyland coached in the Tigers minor league system, then started managing with Bristol of the Appalachian Rookie League in 1971. The Pirates sank from there following the departures of Bonds and ace pitcher Doug Drabek as free agents, and Leyland left after Pittsburgh’s fourth straight losing season in 1996. “Climate change is affecting every aspect of our lives,” Hayhoe told CNN. Here are five significant takeaways from the federal government’s sweeping climate report. Climate change doesn’t cause things like hurricanes or wildfires, but it can make them more intense or more frequent. And hotter and drier conditions from climate change can help vegetation and trees become tinderboxes, turning wildfires into megafires that spin out of control. But it’s not happening nearly fast enough to stabilize the planet’s warming or meet the United States’ international climate commitments, the report explains.

In 1889, journalist Nellie Bly set off on a trip around the world, trying to make it under 80 days. "You see a huge emphasis being placed on building ships that were ever faster than the previous generation of ships," Goodman said. Once aboard the train, Bly began to receive telegrams from her editors and well-wishers. "Sometimes it literally literally just says, 'Nelly Bly's train,'" Behn said.
